Business of the Month: Kearney Lion’s Club

The Kearney Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the Kearney Lion’s Club has been selected as the Business of the Month for December 2016. TThe following interview was conducted with current club president, Steve Main.

Kearney Lions Club Logo1). How long have you been a member of the Lions Club and what is your title there?
I started with the Kearney Lions Club in January 2000. I am currently the club president.

2). When was the Lions Club founded in Kearney?
Kearney Lions Club was chartered in 1950.

3). What is your Mission Statement?
Our motto is “We Serve”. The Lions Main focus is Vision. We support groups like Leader Dog for the Blind, Lions Heartland Eye Bank. The club collects eyeglasses and works through Dr. Bowles here in Kearney to recycle these to people that are in need. We also help out youth in our school district. If they need glasses and can’t afford them, we see that they get glasses.

4). If someone would like to join, what is involved in doing so?
New members are welcome anytime. Dues are 35 twice a year, in January and July. We meet twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Thursday, 7PM at Kearney City Hall. A person can contact someone in the club or just show up at a meeting.

5). You’re a very active club. Please tell us some of the many services you provide here.
Our biggest project Is collecting the eyeglasses. Working with the school district to make sure all kids are able to have glasses if they need them. We also give out 2 scholarships to high school seniors. Our annual Halloween party is a big event for us. It has been going for at least 50 years and is a lot of fun. The club also has a wine festival the first Saturday in June. It is a really enjoyable event.

6). Please share with us your biggest project or success story that the Club has done.
Our biggest project was selling belt buckles back in the eighties. They were earning money to buy the land that is now Lions Park and donating it to the city.

7).  Anything else you’d like to add?
The club picks a high school student to play in the Missouri Lions Band. This band plays at halftime in the Missouri Lions Blue and Gold All-Star football Game in Warrensburg, MO. The Lions pick high school seniors for two scholarships, Outstanding KHS Senior Boy Outstanding KHS Senior Girl.
