Looking for a fun way to burn a few calories with family and friends – before gathering for your Thanksgiving meal?
Then, put on your best turkey, pilgrim or holiday-themed costume and get ready for the 5th Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot on Thursday, November 24, at Kearney High School’s Bulldog Complex, 715 E 19th St.
The event benefits the Kearney High School cross country team and the Kearney School District Education Foundation.
The first of the main races, which include a 4-mile run/walk and 1-mile run/walk, begins at 8:30 a.m. The course starts and finishes at the complex and follows blacktop roads, paved trails and an all-weather running track.
In addition, at 8 a.m., early walkers and pre-K kids can participate in the Parents as Teachers’ Fun Tot Trot – a short run/walk with Bruiser the Bulldog and Titus the Turkey. While the Trot is free, parents are asked to register their children online at http://www.thanksgivingturkeytrot.com/index.php/race-info/registration.
Like last year, runners are encouraged to dress up in costume. However, costumes are not required to race and do not have to be limited to the Thanksgiving theme. Prizes will be awarded to the best adult male, adult female, boy and girl.
Furthermore, you can register with your family and friends as a team. There is no limit on the number of team members. You can give your team a name and dress in matching shirts, hats, socks or costumes.
Medals will be awarded to the top, overall male and female finishers as well as to the top finishers in each age category for the 4-mile and 1-mile races. Furthermore, each child will receive a participation ribbon.
The cost to register by midnight on Sunday, November 13, is $20 per person (whether you run as an individual or on a team), which includes a race T-shirt. After the early bird deadline, you can register online for $30 through Wednesday, November 23 (does not include a T-shirt). To register as an individual or group, click here.
Registration also will be held at 7 a.m. the day of the race in the Kearney High School Commons and will cost $35 (does not include a T-shirt).
Note: For safety reasons, walkers and racers with strollers and pets will be asked to start at the back of the lineup.
