Northland Therapeutic Riding Center Needs Volunteers

Volunteer Orientation Tuesday March 8th, 5:30-8:00

NTRC Riding Volunteer Orientation

At NTRC, therapeutic riding is implemented by licensed physical, occupational, and speech therapists as well as certified therapeutic riding instructors.

WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC RIDING?

Therapeutic Riding uses equine-oriented activities to positively impact the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being of people with special needs. The horse is a unique therapy tool in that its walk is rhythmic and repetitive and encourages movement responses in riders that are similar to human movement patterns of the pelvis while walking. Therapeutic riding can benefit children and adults with many special challenges, including

  • Down syndrome
  • Autism Multiple Sclerosis
  • Brain injury Cerebral Palsy
  • Muscular Dystrophy Speech, vision, and hearing issues
  • Cognitive and behavioral issues

Therapeutic riding can provide: Improved balance, * posture * coordination; increased muscle tone * strength increased

  • Improved balance, posture, and coordination

  • Increased range of motion and flexibility
  • Increased problem-solving skills and concentration
  • Increased confidence, patience and self-esteem.

WHY VOLUNTEER?

Volunteers are needed to fill many roles, with both riders and horses.  Horse experience is not required for all positions. You must be 14 yrs old to volunteer. Some of the many volunteer opportunities include: Side walker, horse leader, or barn projects, special events and office assistance. Classes are held Monday 3:00 – 6:00, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 3:00-9:00.  At least two hours a week for a 6-week session.
