Business of the Month – Mid Continent Public Library

Mid Continent Library Kearney Branch

The Mid-Continent Public Library’s Kearney Branch, one of 31 branches in the greater Kansas City area, opened in 1998. The Library strives to enrich its citizens and communities through expanding access to innovation, information, ideas, and inspiration. The branch manager is Angela Gillette and assistant manager is Billie Maples.

The Kearney Branch hosts a variety of programs for all ages. For younger children and their caregivers, we have programs like Storytimes and wildlife programs by the Kansas City Zoomobile (10:00 a.m. July 7), Nature Detectives: Missouri Reptiles (10:00 a.m. June 30), and Operation Wildlife: The Day Shift (10:00 a.m. June 9). For teens, we’re offering a Babysitting 101 class (10:00 a.m. June 18) and a Creative Station program focusing on the Abobe Creative Suite (2:30 p.m. July 26). While adults can enjoy basic yoga classes, technology classes, and more. These and many more programs can be found at mymcpl.org/events.

In addition to programs, we offer a range of other services to support the community, including our Square One Small Business Services, which supports local entrepreneurs; Library-By-Mail, which delivers materials to the homebound; countless online resources, from homework help to genealogy research; as well as numerous craft and book groups for adults. These and many more programs can be found at mymcpl.org/events.

Our annual Summer Reading program kicked off on May 16 and goes until July 31. Kids from 0-18 can participate and earn free books and qualify for great prizes including tickets from our SRP Teammates – the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Kansas Speedway, Missouri Mavericks, and Sporting KC. We will be continuing our Storytimes this summer for the young ones, plus we have guest speakers and presenters at 10:00 a.m. on Thursdays. In addition to our programs for younger children, older children will enjoy Kids at the Library: Now Playing (2:00 p.m. June 8) and Mad Science Demonstrates Up, Up, and Away (2:00 p.m. June 22). We will be hosting a LEGO program on Saturday, June 25 at 10:00 a.m.

Other programs that we are offering this summer include Windows 10 training (2:00 p.m. June 2), Ham Radio testing (first Saturdays of the month), and teens will be sharpening their writing skills at our Summer Writing Workshop at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons. We had 13 to 15 teens at our writing program last year and space is limited, so encourage interested teens to sign up as soon as possible for this year’s workshop.

The Library is a community hub that provides access to free information, entertainment, and educational resources for everyone. Our staff are always available to help recommend resources or find just the right book to take on your summer vacation!
